The board of directors of the Chatham Film Club, owner of the historic Crandell Theatre, has announced the election of Fred Ulrich as its new president. Ulrich succeeds Sandi Knakal, who had been president of the Film Club since 2002, succeeding founder Carole Roseman.
Knakal led the non-profit organization during a critical time in its history – the purchase of the Crandell Theatre in June 2010, following the untimely death of then-owner Tony Quirino. She also oversaw the crucial fundraising efforts and lengthy work that followed the building’s purchase: this included replacing the furnace and roof, preserving the façade and, most important, last year buying and installing a digital projector.
“I’d like to sincerely thank all current and former board members for their support and contribution to the profoundly successful history of the Chatham Film Club,” Knakal says. “The organization was run completely by volunteers until 2010 and, to this day, relies on the guidance of the board’s volunteer efforts. What we’ve accomplished together with the larger community is truly amazing.”
New board president Ulrich began his relationship with the Film Club in 2010 as a volunteer, joining the board in 2012. “I am an avid film lover,” he says, “and I am delighted to become board president at a time when membership has reached nearly 1,000, an all-time high, and we have just completed a year with record attendance at our weekly films, our twice-monthly Sunday matinees, and the renowned FilmColumbia festival in October. Over 37,000 patrons visited the Crandell in 2013, and we plan to continue the high-quality programming that has made this possible.”
Though Knakal is stepping down as president, she will remain on the Chatham Film Club board of directors, and both she and Ulrich look forward to working together on strengthening the Film Club’s community outreach in the coming years.
